The day when Devi Durga is believed to have descended on earth is known as Mahalaya. This is an auspicious occasion observed seven days before the Durga Puja and the Goddess is invoked to descend on earth to annihilate all evils. According to mythology it is believed that “Pitri- paksha” ends on this day and “Devi- paksha” begins.
According to numerous Hindu Puranas during the period of Pitri- Paksha it is the duty of the son to make sure that his ancestors ‘ soul goes to heaven. A food offering ritual known as Shola Shraddha is compulsory for the son. This is known as ‘torpon’. This ritual is performed in pre-dawn or dawn time and is believed to be a very significant event of the Hindus. It is believed that from this period begins the ‘Devi-Paksha’.
According to Hindu tradition the period of New moon to Full moon in the Bengali month of Bhadra remains the ‘Devi- paksha’ or the Goddess period. This fifteen day period is the time to perform any sacred work for the Hindus. Goddess Durga is believed to have come to Earth seven days before the four day long Durga Puja festival. She is believed to stay on Earth through the ‘Devi- paksha’ starting from the Mahalaya to Doshomi. This day is also termed as ‘Akal Bodhon’ or ‘Untimely worship’ as Lord Rama worshipped Devi Durga in the month of autumn before going to Lanka to rescue Devi Sita.
