The only thing birds look for in a garden is food. So, a garden should be well equipped with food. In order to ensure food for the birds one should plant more trees and pay attention towards their growth and nourishment. The basics of life available in a garden will attract more birds to it. However small or big a garden may be birds would always fly in once they get food, security, and a homely atmosphere. A garden situated in close proximity to a countryside or a wooded park will however attract more birds as visitors.

Some common residents of a garden are  Dunnocks, Jays, Sparowhawks, Green woodpeckers, Siskins and Woodpegions. Among these Green  woodpeckers are a rare visitor to a garden. They are mainly seen when the ground is frozen and generally feeds upon fallen apple and berry seeds.

Health of a bird should also be kept in mind in order to increase the population in a garden.Feeders should be regularly fertilized and  moldy seeds should be removed in order to reduce the risk of spreading diseases.They should be cleaned more frequently and kept pace with the increasing number of birds.A detailed study of the birds should also be made in order to suspect any illness or abnormality in their behavior.The nest boxes should also be cleaned especially in the winter by removing worn out nests and cleaning the boxes with hot water.This kills paracites and keeps the boxes clean.They should then be attached in perfect position.A slight change in the location and type of nest boxes can change the mood of the birds.
